I did not want to post this in the Suggestions for 2.0, as I didn’t wanting to add to the feature wars that seem to ensue at mention of particular feature requests.
The feature request thread doesn’t really seem the appropriate thread for the discussion of what is good and what is bad and why one feature is stupid while another is golden. In fact, what I tend to see is that people who are combat focused, tend toward thinking that changing comms is secondary, where people who want more exploration, science, story, tend to find comms boring and repetitive. Effectively, and according to Thom’s own posts to the request thread, both play methods are valid and necessary for the future of Artemis.
Rather than using the forum to argue for why one person’s opinion of a particular feature is good, or attempting to invalidate another person’s opinion as invalid, what if there were a ‘Feature request’ forum, where each feature request is submitted as a post. Then, other users can vote on the feature (probably something like a +1 vote. Then we have a simple count of how many people are interested in said feature. It’s a lot more mathematical and easier to dig through the data, so that Thom can decide what to add. This will help prevent a lot of the thread bloat that effectively buries some features that aren’t discussed as widely as others.
Just my $0.02 on the matter.
I could be wrong, but I think Thom adds what Thom wants to add and is really only marginally shifted this way or that by forum requests.
Which I think is good because I'd rather have a game driven by one man's vision than a committee (even if it doesn't include my own favored child of an idea!)
:)
I see. That makes sense. I agree with staying away from commitee. But I didn't realize that was how things went. In some ways, that makes the feature lobbying in the request thread that much more unnecessary.
I think Thom listens to the community and takes what ideas he likes, but largely programs Artemis in the direction he has for it.
More of a 'that's a great idea, let's use that' approach rather than simply ignoring suggestions for the most part.
I think Mike posted something to that effect in the Artemis Universe thread grouping.
