The Android port of Artemis is now released!

posted May 09, 2013 11:43:09 by ThomRobertson
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=incandescent.game.artemis

This version of the game should work on Android 2.3 or better, OpenGL ES 2.0 or better, 480x320 or better resolution, and at least 512mb.

We haven't been approved yet by the Amazon App store; when we do I'll post that link too.

@timechick: go browsing around the file system of that Allwinner F9 tablet with SU access. If you can find a file called "vesselData.xml", we may be in luck.

I tried it on my Samsung Galaxy S3. It works, but the UI is horribly optimised. One size does not fit all. There are huge chunks of black space on some screens, and clusters of buttons on others. Engineering is cluttered, Weapons is spread across too many screens. Helm is kinda fun if you're only using impulse, warp and rudder, but stuff like shields, dock and reverse could easily have gone on that same screen.
Science is a bastard of a thing to zoom around on and click targets. Comms is flawless, but that was to be expected :)

All I found was that libartemis.so file too under a subdirectory called lib. Other stuff is under /data/data/incandescent.games.artemis/ files and cache. and the app under /data/app/incandescent.games.artemis/

Don't you and Thom talk? I looked everywhere for that vesselData.xml file.

Never met Thom other than in these forums--and I've asked in the forums about modding the Android and iOS versions with no response.

The information you've found is consistent with what I've found and suspected. At this time it looks like the Android version cannot be modded.

He has responded to my suggestion about making it easier to mod Artemis without outright overwriting files, and he may follow the suggested pattern for version 2 of the Android version, which will solve the issues. I'm hoping he'll be at Origins in Columbus this weekend--if so, I plan on introducing myself and hope to briefly discuss future options for modding. He has encouraged modding, so I imagine he'll be open to suggestions to make it work on the various platforms.

While you're there chatting if you get so lucky. Ask him to put in an option to run the Artemis server as a background service with a webpage interface remotely. That way I can just put up a server somewhere in cyberspace, set it running and we can play from anywhere with anyone.

I know Thom has his hands full with the 2.0 update, but I was just curious to know if the Android version of Artemis was going to be updated to 1.7.2 anytime soon.

I got the app from the Amazon store today. Had to turn on a 1-Click feature in my Amazon account. What I got was v 1.7.01. I'm running the version I bought, 1.7.0, on my laptop (Win 7 Home Premium). Running Polaroid pad (Android, Ice Cream Sandwich) as client seems to make it unhappy, says it fails to connect. I flipped (ran the server on the Android and client on Windows) and get a box complaining about wrong version, but click the X and it seemed ok. Tempted to run the 1.7.02 upgrader... Would have been nice to get the same versions. (Or at least compatible versions.)

I had a similar problem. Try useing the Android as a client, and turn your firewall off. If it works (like mine did) you need to add the Artemis port to your exceptions list. Can't remember which one it is at the moment.

I may have solution (from elsewhere in the fora). Tried using a WiFi HotSpot, not a real router. AND, that was it.

Woo 1.703! What's new in this update? There's nothing in the typical "what's new" description :)

+1 to the above. What is included in the new update? The "what's new" is blank.

Found this on Google Play (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=incandescent.game.artemis&feature=nav_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDMsImluY2FuZGVzY2VudC5nYW1lLmFydGVtaXMiXQ..):

V1.703 offers three significant changes.
- users with super-hi-res screens have some relief from tiny buttons now.
- the back button on Android phones now works.
- a pernicious bug that troubled the science console has been fixed.
V1.703 is still fully compatible with all V1.70x versions of the game.
