Artemis Vessel Library (PC/Tablet/Smartphone)

posted Mar 31, 2013 20:29:08 by michaelhermanns
Dear Friends, Science Officers and Captains,

i thought it would be helpful, to have some kind of library computer at hand when needed - on the Bridge! Especially in moments like when the science officer reports several incoming "Arvonian Light Carriers", I'm asking myself how fast they are or how many fighters they have on board.

So this afternoon i made a small vessel library. It can be opened by any browser from any device (hopefully). I simply use it from my smartphone browser.

The library simply shows some graphics from the manual (good contrast, easy to update). No fancy graphics, just buttons you can hit easily in the heat of a battle. I know, there is much potential for improvement though.

At the bottom, I added links to the Artemis homepage, Facebook, Twitter, the unofficial Wiki in case you need further info and my eMail if you want to contact me. No copyright infringement intended.

Here is the link.

Tell me what you think!

Checked out the library from my tablet (which the Captain would likely use) and found the site easy to navigate with pertinent information readily available.
Bookmarking the site and recommending to other players.

Simple and gets the job done. I like this! Perfect for a captains in-chair console!

Nice! If you're okay with the idea, I'd like to host them on Artemis Command.

Very nice work - simple but highly functional.

TreChipman: hey, i like your site! I think the vessel library isn't completely done yet, also there will be updates necessary on the charts sometimes too ... so, how would i update the files at your domain, if you host them? Wouldn't it be easier, if you set a link or use an iframe? Or am I getting it wrong?

I think about adding more Data referring to mods maybe, if there would be some material available?

Thanks for the comments!

I would probably put this in the hands of the com officer so that they have more to do.

Thanks, michaelhermanns! One of the things I'm trying to do is have a script that constantly polls and parses the log so a companion station (Science 2 or Comms 2, for example) can pull up relevant data-- based on your mission instance and log file data (which will probably have to be changed, unfortunately) you'd have a secondary screen like this:

http://www.artemiscommand.com/content/html.cgi?section=30.1.0.0

To see what it would kinda do, hit "INPUT FCTN 412 COMMIT" or "INPUT FCTN 712 COMMIT", although ideally, when information about something is "unlocked" in a mission, you'd just hit a single key.

Anyway, I think your vessel charts are a natural addition-- I can host them if you'd like, or I think I could probably use the existing URLs, but with your blessing, I'd like to incorporate them into the system I've outlined above.

The only problem i see is the wiki has a page like this under ship stats which tells you everything on one page. So why is this better?

You are correct, that all info is on one page there, but open the wiki page on a smartphone and you'll see the difference compared to this. It's just an alternative.

@TreChipman: feel free to use the link! Cool script you are running there. I am looking forward to see this in action.

Pretty awesome as a whole! Though I'm not a fan of all the content on a page being an image file. Leave the picture content images, leave the text as text. Then the text can scale the way it needs to on whatever device is loading the content. Much easier to read, and better load times.

Good work!

@RyanWelsh: you are absolutely right. I simply put the pics in there for a first version, to see if this would be interesting for others in the first place before putting too much work in it. I replaced the pics with text where possible. Also i highlighted the pushed buttons, to let you know where you are. So i could save some place.

@TaigiaReilly: the firing arcs will be in the pic. The green number shown is the firing range.

Try it out.
