Please, for the love of God...

posted Mar 28, 2013 01:21:19 by TreChipman
... can we get some better forum software, preferably some that wasn't written on an island in the South Pacific?

Please understand that I didn't even come here to complain about the forums. I was trying to respond to something else and got frustrated when it timed out on the third 20 minute attempt. So now we have this.

The forums are down almost as much as they're up, and you can't even link directly to responses or topics. I get it's free, but seriously, this is just embarrassing. I'd be more than happy to donate the largely unused forum at http://www.artemiscommand.com if for no other reason than I'd like to actually be able to see the forums now and then.

Just a thought.

EDIT: By the way, this is probably showing up twice because my initial submission timed out. If you're reading this, it means, miraculously, that the forum software has let me edit something.

....

Maybe it's just you, but apart from a formatting problem that happened for a little while, I've never had any issues whatsoever with the forums.

That said, I'm on the other side of the world to most of the other users here so it could just be that I'm online when none of you are..

I have issues at all times of day and night. Sometimes it just isn't working and for a growing community that could push new people away.

Forums are 50/50 for me as well. Sometimes they are completely inaccessible for hours at a time.

This has been a bad week for the forums. But as online forums go these are pretty good. Most are full of spam.
"Damn the torpedoes! Four bells, Captain Drayton!"

(Likely actual words of Admiral David Farragut, USN, at the battle of Mobile Bay. Four bells was the signal for the engine room to make full steam ahead).

I have never had a problem and I check them a few times a week. I don't, however, post 1,000 word essays as some people do.

Post length is pretty irrelevant if you can't actually get to the forums to post in the first place.

True. I am curious why some people have so many problems, while others have none. That alone may mean we need a system that is more compatible across more systems. What browser are you using?

I'm using Firefox, but it frequently fails to come up on IE, too. However, the fact that it fails randomly makes me pretty certain that the fault is server based, not client based.

I've only had a couple of issues with it in over the last couple of months (I'm on Firefox as well).

I use Chrome, and only every once in a while I have to refresh the page, and I'm on here a few times a day

The ability to link to another post would be useful. Other than that, I just find the forums slow sometimes. For some reason the Missions Thread is ALWAYS the slow one, and I mean 100% of the time. No idea why. Other than that, this is usually up for me and I use Safari and Chrome (depending on my device of choice).

I use Chrome, and maybe a quarter of the time I'm here the forums are extremely sluggish.

I have occasional issues (every few days) with Safari. I was thinking about this before. PHPBB is easy to use and has useful features, but like Mike S said, i've known it to be a spam magnet in the past unless you modify the security. Fortunately there are numerous options available for this. The problem is most board admins don't utilise them.

Forum has been inaccessible for me for the past 4 hours.
tal.ki has been up and running, but px2owffng8.embed.tal.ki was down. Definitely an issue on their end.

I should take this opportunity to point out that I understand that "Waaah... my forum software for the computer game I like sometimes fails" is pretty much the definition of a First World Problem(tm), so please know I'm cognizant of that. That being said, I do want this game to succeed, and things that unnecessarily hobble it are things I tend to take issue with.

So, basically, I complain because I love.
