Leap motion controller?

posted Mar 28, 2013 03:13:46 by Gaikokujin
Has anyone looked into the Leap Motion Controller?

Basically it's a Kinect, but miniaturized and extremely accurate. Ten finger tracking down to sub-millimeter accuracy. It's also designed to work for Mac and PC. Look up some of the videos on YouTube and it seems really impressive, but I was curious about anyone's thoughts on using it with Artemis. Unfortunately they don't ship until May, so I won't get to try it until then.

Flip bird to fire torpedos ;)

I dunno. Doesn't sound like an input technology that fits Artemis. But i am curious, what specific uses did you have in mind?

I checked their website--I'm impressed.

Based on what I see with the video, it probably installs an API that translates the functions to appropriate mouse and touch commands, and therefore would probably actually be a perfect fit for Artemis--and may even open up pretty good 3D navigation.

It's $80 US at this point--not bad for new tech like this. I might try it out in the latter part of this year--after it's had a chance to be proven, and the price might come down a bit.

Couldn't this be used to turn any screen into a touch screen, if you positioned/adjusted it just so?

Looks to be more of the "I'm-not-touching-you" touch screen. :D
I'd have to try one in person before picking one up, but I can imagine a number of uses for it.

@JamesDunnem: Yeah--I agree with having to try it out. And, @troy, I get the idea that it would be a kind of touch-screen option for a non-touch screen. I'd like to see how the thing does for a few different applications that aren't specially programmed for it.
