Red alert loop?

posted Mar 02, 2013 23:37:45 by RichardDobbins
Hello everyone,

Does anyone know if there is currently a way to loop the alarm4.wav sound that plays whenever red alert is initiated? I tried to get around this by replacing the sound file with one that is something like 100 times longer in duration; however, the alarm keeps sounding even after red alert is turned off, and things get messy.

Basically I want the alarm to loop continuously for as long as red alert is on. Is this something that can be accomplished via work-around, or will we have to wait for a future update?

Why do you hate your crew so much?

Yes, I understand the *slight* annoyance it might create, but I'm imagining the level of realism it would help to accomplish. Having a constant alarm would definitely add to the chaos and terror brought on by the possible destruction of one's ship, thereby setting the appropriately high level of intensity for such an event!

Actually that could really enhance the experience. I however would only support this if red alert were changed. The change would be whenever the ship takes damage red alert goes off until the ship is repaired. That would allow for an actual reason to have the loop. Right now a loop doesn't make sense as the purpose behind red alert is nearly inform everyone you are in combat.

I think you could do this in a mission script with the play sound command. If red alert is a two second sound clip, just put it on a timer that plays the alert every two seconds. However, that would only work in specific missions not in invasion mode.

I totally agree with you, Captain. It could be beneficial to include two levels of alert - red and yellow. Yellow alert would be for situations in which you are engaging in combat and the shields are taking damage (effectively replacing what is now the red alert), and would be toggled by the Comms station. Red alert would only automatically sound when the shields went offline and the hull started taking direct damage.

I thought it would be cool if the red alert sounded something like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k2VhB7vaZI0

Nice really brings in the feel. Would be good for immersion into game although some may find it rather annoying. I would support adding it if in the options screen you could turn off the automatic alarm. That way those that've ant immersion can have it and those that don't won't have to. Overall though cool idea and sound.

When a real warship sounds its battle alarm the sound only lasts briefly. The crew needs to be able to talk to each other during battle! While red lighting may stay on throught the course of the battle (there is a good reason for this) the alarm claxxon would not stay on all that time.
"Damn the torpedoes! Four bells, Captain Drayton!"

(Likely actual words of Admiral David Farragut, USN, at the battle of Mobile Bay. Four bells was the signal for the engine room to make full steam ahead).

Don't the mods replace sounds? Isn't the red alert sound one you can replace? If you really hate your crew, that is.

True. I was thinking of something less like a battle alarm, and more along the lines of a fire alarm, that would keep sounding until the problem (fire, hull breach, etc.) was dealt with. When things get really drastic, i.e. "imminent destruction" drastic, then I could see the alarm acting like an "ABANDON SHIP" alarm (of course, being a good captain, I would never think twice about going down with my ship). I can't think of any specific examples, but I got the idea from video games in which an alarm increases in frequency, volume, etc. to indicate the worsening state of the ship as it takes damage.

Don't the mods replace sounds?

Yes, the mods replace sounds, but still can't loop them, as far as I'm aware. As Eric ('Proper' Eric) said, you can use a mission script to make a sound loop itself, which is a great workaround; the only problem is that you can't use this feature in Invasion (or Coop) mode, which is what my crew and I pretty much exclusively play.

Why do you hate your crew so much?

If you really hate your crew, that is.

I like how most of you are assuming that I must really hate my crew, when in fact this suggestion was brought up by most of my crew and agreed upon as a feature they would like to see in the game! In that case, I must be commanding a crew of masochists... :P

To quote Picard the first time he got onto the bridge during a red alert:
"SOMEONE TURN OFF THAT DAMNED NOISE!"
