I finally got around to making a video showing off the DMX setup I'm using.

Alex, any chance you care to share your coding with us? Thanks!

Alex:

That is absolutely an awesome setup!

I have two quick questions - first, I saw the lights flicker when the ship was hit with the shields up. What happens when the ship is hit with the shields down? Is there a different lighting effect? Also, when the shields are kicked down to zero, do the lights in back stay blue, or do they change?

Second, how do you get one set of lights to react to one thing (like shield status), and another set to react to something else. I'm still learning about DMX, but am about ready to take the plunge.

Regards,

Jim

The PLAYER_HIT lighting cue layers on top of whatever is going on. Same with the SHIP_DAMAGE_XX cues.

Whatever light is on will flicker when those events go off.

If you want a good look at a two-light DMX file that does just what you say, has shield status in the front and tractor/docked/redalert in the back as well as strobing flashes across the lights with damage, check out my DMXCommands Code Share post where I have a link to my XML file for you to look at.

I would like to take a look at that file, but I'm having a little trouble finding that post. What forum is it posted in?

Jim,

The first few seconds of this video cleared up my questions about DMX and how to use multiple lights independently from each other.

All lights flicker when shields are down just as they do when shields are up. This is, of course, changeable in the DMX xml file.

Thanks, Alex - that video definitely cleared a lot of things up for me. All I need to do now is decide whether I want to buy everything plug and play, or do I want to try and build the lights myself. It looks like I could save a fair amount going the DIY route; and I have a little electronics background from wiring model railroads.

Ah you'll be just fine, Jim. But, check out your local Guitar Center (if you have one) for clearance deals.
