Project Riverside - Building A Mobile Command Deck

posted Dec 14, 2012 19:55:44 by Cmdr.Brandr
To All Ranks, Captains, Commanders, Admirals, Ensigns, Privateers, etc.

The crew of the TSN Calamitous Intent would like to announce our Mobile Command Deck build which we have given the code name of Project Riverside (Iowa). You can see our nifty logo above. We are building in a 20ft car hauler trailer that Cmdr.Brandr inheirited from his Dad earlier this year. On an amusing side note Dad built Cmdr.Brandr a spaceship playhouse when the Cmdr was a child.

Back to the build...we just got the trailer back from the trailer vendor where we had heat and A/C installed. The walls and ceiling are about 80% done with insulation and new panels. The elevated platform for the captain's chair, comms and engineering stations is in place. The touchscreens and computers are in hand. The rear sliding door and the motor drive system for it are scheduled to go up with the rest of the walls this weekend.

If all goes according to plan we should be debuting the Mobile Command Deck at ShadowCon in early January.

Stay tuned for pictures and further updates.

Pics or it didn't happen!
I'm not a mad scientist. I'm an angry one. You'd be wise to fear the latter.

I am looking forward to some photos, too!
"Damn the torpedoes! Four bells, Captain Drayton!"

(Likely actual words of Admiral David Farragut, USN, at the battle of Mobile Bay. Four bells was the signal for the engine room to make full steam ahead).

I LOVE how you're playing Artemis inside it long before you get it all finished! I would have too!

Just a quick status update on the trailer build. We've got the walls hung and the floor put in. We haven't done much work since Christmas because the 12" of snow we got here in central Arkansas. I lost power at the house for about 2 days. The power is back now for a couple of days. Tomorrow we hope to make some more progress. We'll post pictures in the evening.

Today, Kwadroke came over and we put together some awesome light tubes for the front wall of the Mobile Command Deck. Credit for a lot of the design goes to my lovely wife who's suggestion really made it come together easily. Add Kwadroke's suggestions when he showed up and well the pictures say it all. :-D

Believe it or not these are built using 5 gallon plastic buckets and light panel covers. The light source is a standard DMX compatible LED par can that I bought. As you can see the results are just awesome. I am working on a how-to write up for this that I hope to post later this week.

Utterly cool!

I look forward to reading your proposed write-up.

When you get it done, I'm gonna have to come out and play Artemis in your bridge myself (if you'll let me).

Dude, those lights are amazing! What kind of light panel covers did you use? or are you going to wait until the end for an indexed Bill of Materials? :)

Thom,
You are welcome to come play anytime! :-) Since your work on Artemis is a large part of the motivation behind Project Riverside, I'd be silly not too. LOL

MarkBell,
I can't remember the exact name of the light panels off the top of my head. The brand name is Plastikote and it's just a 48" X 24" light panel from Lowes. I've got a picture of the label on my phone and I'll post that later. A detailed list of materials will follow. Today I am going to finish the Main Screen and get it set up for play tonight. I plan to take some videos so look for that tomorrow.

One thing to definitely add to the indexed BOM for the Mobile Command Deck is a loving wife who puts up with supports your brand of crazy.

Party safe tonight!

okay I was close on the panel type. Here's a picture of the label. It's the Cracked Ice style panel. To fit the top of the bucket you will need 2 panels. One cut to 12" wide the the other normal width.
