Artemis.exe has stopped working

posted Oct 26, 2012 18:12:22 by hauserron
I bought two licenses to run as a teen program at my library. The first session was last week and we had repeated crashes of both clients and the server.

I'm running Artemis version 1.661 under 32 bit Windows 7 Professional SP1 on an open public internet (have tried both wifi and wired.) I used two different hardware configurations, one being Intel Core2Duo 2.66GHz (E7300) with 2GB RAM. The other machines run some sort of AMD 64 processor.

I'm getting frequent error dialogs on both systems stating, "Artemis.exe has stopped working." The "view problem details" box from the Intel machine lists the following:

I can successfully connect to the server. Sometimes it will play for a short time (a few minutes) and other times it crashes (clients, server, or both) as soon as I hit "Start Game".

Any suggestions?

C0000005 is usually an access error either for a bad memory zone or a file that can't be opened.

I would make sure that you've removed the demo version if you ever installed that, then I would first reinstall Artemis, and if you still have trouble. Copy the Artemis folder somewhere else (like c:\Artemis) and try running the Artemis.exe from there and seeing if that clears anything up.

Having a very similar issue myself. I suspect it's actually some kind of permissions issue.
Will try reinstalling and see what happens.

Reinstalling didn't help.
So, I'm getting the error message when I click 'Start Game' on the server. I'm running artemis on a Server 2012 OS over a rdp connection.

I'm getting the same thing when trying to launch the server under Win7 64-bit. As soon as I click Start Server, I get the following error log:

Faulting application name: Artemis.exe, version: 0.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x50564c0a
Faulting module name: Artemis.exe, version: 0.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x50564c0a
Exception code: 0xc0000005
Fault offset: 0x00053343
Faulting process id: 0x19b4
Faulting application start time: 0x01cddb40a35aa8f0
Faulting application path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Artemis\Artemis.exe
Faulting module path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Artemis\Artemis.exe
Report Id: e9f296b0-4733-11e2-98e6-60fb4285b53e

I've tried re-installing, uninstall and reinstall, and reboot. I can connect to a running server successfully, but not start a server.

Any ideas?

Re-quoted for truth....

System never had the demo version installed, so that's not there. Also, my primary PC has both the demo version and the licensed version installed, server runs without issut. As I noted above, I have tried re-installing, then uninstalling, deleting the Artemis directory from Program Files (x86), and then re-installing; same issue. I tried moving the folder to Desktop and running Artemis.exe from there, same issue. Tried moving it to C:\Artemis, same problem. I also tried changing the Read/Write privileges on the folder, and making sure my account was the owner of the folder, but same issue.

HOWEVER ... I did figure it out. :) My sound devices were all disabled! I typically use this system for work, and use a headphone/mic combo for sound, and leave on-board sound disabled. Since I didn't have the headphones plugged in, the system didn't have an active sound card. So as soon as I clicked "Start Server", it goes to initialize the server sounds, and dies. Once I enabled the sound card, the server starts without issue. Disable sound, try again, server crashes.

Obviously this needs better error checking and handling, so that users can troubleshoot it easier, but it is a simple fix. I'm noting this here in case anyone else runs up against this.

Thanks for your help!
