Docking and Comms.
I'm curious if there is any benefit to telling a station to "stand by for docking" or if it's a just for fun thing.

The game has a built-in element to encourage this behavior:
If COMMS reports that you are docking, then there's a 60 second production boost on that station. I'm not sure if the timer starts when they approve your docking or when you actually dock.
Either way you should definitely have COMMS call first, if possible.
