Weapon Review: Drones

posted Jun 06, 2012 17:24:26 by ThomRobertson
The new version of the Torgoth, and their drones, have been in the game for a few weeks now. I'm sure they could be tuned to be better, and I'm sure you have an opinion about them.

Let's talk about Torgoth drones. How could they be better?

I think the drones are great as they are! The improvement that they bring to mind is letting the Weapons Officer select different targets for each beam weapon. It could be a different firing mode, like the manual targeting.

Personally my team likes as they are, they've added a lot of excitement to the games.

I agree with Mike the drones are great the way they are. And being able to select multi able targets would be a great addition.

In one game, the torgoth drones chased us across 3 sectors. Jump drive, invasion mode, very interesting, current version of the game.

Once again, drones are fine, but they expose a different problem.

Countering drones would work much better if weapons would have control over the beams - the best suggestion out there was to change beams so that you can fire as fast as you like, or even continuously, but beams charge over time from 0 to 100% of power (energy to beams speeds that up) and so if you fire very frequently, you deal less damage with each shot.

One other unrelated suggestion was for weapons to have a toggle for chain fire or simultaneous fire mode - wether to fire all beam arcs at once, or one after another. This would allow you to actually shoot down multiple drones without need for helms to maneuver so that the first drone is out of one of the arcs but then second drone is in that arc.

Another possibility is to allow drones to be targeted with ECM's since those destroy drones with their aoe.

having been chased all over tarnation by a fleet of drones I'd like them to
1 have a limited range
2 worse handeling/longer turning radious
3 the ability to "loose" the drones if you go thru a nebulea
4 the ability to get turn the drones back on the enemy ships

any and or all of these things I'd love to see added to the drones

MatthewNazy have you noticed that drones are destroyed by asteroid collisions? This gives Helm the ability to destroy drones in a pinch.

I've used the asteroid collision tactic once as Helm. It takes a little bit to get it done.

I use asteroids a fair amount if I can as a helmsman. Enemy ships are particularly bad at navigating asteroid fields - the only thing you need to watch out for is that your own torpedoes are blocked by asteroids too.

Yeah but I was playing one of the missions and the map didn't have any asteroids on it so that option was not available to me

Matthew: another solution is to get your engineer to increase manoeuvrability (and maybe impulse) so you can get into arc before they hit you. Evasive manoeuvres!

Ultimatly that's what we ended up doing however we had like four drones coming at us at a time so long story short we did a lot of evasive manuevers much to no avail as as soon as we had dealt with that volly of Drons we had another wave incoming.

Drones don't really have much of a feel to my crew, we call them torpedoes and are happy with that.

we always engage drones off of the side arc so that we can use heading to control the fields of fire to mask several of our beams for the first and then unmask more beams for subsequent drones. this gives us a the effect of chain fired beams and allows us to interdict them much faster then beams normally recharge.

To answer the question though we enjoy that they can't be evaded indefinitely and have to be dealt with.

I like the drones, they were a tough surprise. We do need the ability to control beams better though. It takes forever to destroy the drones when 4 are heading for you at once and all your beams fire simultaneously.
