Adding new functionality to workstation

Is there a way to give a console (Helm, Engineering, Science, etc) a new function key so they can turn on and off new features I add?

For example, if I want Weapons to turn on a tractor beam described by Vorus in Code Snippets?

There's the "if_player_is_targeting" function but I want the player to target the ship and then engage the tractor beam as supposed to it being automatic. I suppose I'm looking for something like "if_gm_key" but for another console.

There have been a few requests for script-defined 'do x' button on consoles. I think/hope that Thom has this on his list.

I would love having this. The best implementation in the interface would be to just let the script add more buttons on the end of the vertical list on the right of the screen (the same place where there's the view screen selector, the shields up button, and so on.)

I agree this would be cool. In the mean time, if you had enough computers to play with, you could have one for the players set to GM station and just turn its screen off. So you have an extra keyboard next to Weapons, and they hit the T key to engage tractor beam. Status messages like "tractor beam engaged!" could be flashed to the weapons console for feedback. Maybe better yet to give Science or even Comms this blind GM keyboard to even out the workload.

This kind of functionality would be awesome. This game is great, but there's always something more I'm wishing I could do. IF we had the ability to script new buttons into consoles, that'd open up a whole new realm of possibilities.

I asked for the scriptable button several months ago and am chomping at the bit to get it. But never fear! I believe Thom has said it is on the way!

I hope this is coming, too. My guess is that we will see something like the game master buttons, only keyed for the consoles.
