Suggested Mission for a Con

posted Jan 17, 2012 22:03:30 by geeknz
Cross posted to the help forum: http://artemis.eochu.com/forums.html#/20120117/suggested-mission-for-a-con-1191188/

I'm looking at running this at a Role-playing Convention, this weekend. I haven't had a chance to look through the available missions (neither the provided ones, or dowenloadable).

What Missions would people recommend to use at a Con? We are looking for ones that are interesting and engaging for all players. Each play session is 3 hours, if that helps any.

Also what difficultly would people suggest that would be good for a new crew, but still provide a potential challenge?

Given it's a Role-playing convention, missions that have an emphasis on story would probably go down better - but I'd rather something that was engaging and interesting to all players, than a well written story that has the science officer sitting on their thumbs.

Well at the one con I've taken it to I found that the Attract Mode script was a good one for let folks get familiar with the stations. The latest version of Havoc In The Hamok Sector went over well. That's a well designed story and requires all players to pay attention to the game. The energy drain is good so engineering has to constantly watch that. The Warsaw is there for comms to work with. Science is the only one that can see the ships inside the nebula until they're close and of course there's plenty of action for helm, weapons, and the captain. The waning dark worked well for a crew that was inexperienced.

However I think that it really doesn't matter too much. The players are gamers they will roleplay it with or with out a detailed script. Invasion mode on "interesting" let one crew play for a while and they brought the interaction to the game.

Hope This Helps,
Commander Brandr
Commanding Officer of the ship Calamitous Intent

Many of the existing mission scripts will not work correctly with Artemis 1.6. The missions that Thom packages with the 1.6 download do work, including the 1.6 revision of "Havoc in the Hamak Sector."

"Attract Mode" would be very easy to revise, but I have been concentrating on learning the AI system so I haven't gotten to that yet.
"Damn the torpedoes! Four bells, Captain Drayton!"

(Likely actual words of Admiral David Farragut, USN, at the battle of Mobile Bay. Four bells was the signal for the engine room to make full steam ahead).

BTW "Havoc in the Hamak Sector" uses audio communications extensively. There are also special sound effects that clue the players into some key events. These features are supposed to make the game more immersive, but they can also make it a poor choice for convention play. If you get a noisy room the players won't be able to hear well enough to understand what is happening to their ship.

Before you turn players loose in the Hamak Sector, I suggest that you fire it up at the convention and play the first five minutes. You need to make sure that your Main Screen speakers are loud enough and the room is quiet enough for the players to hear everything.

"Attract Mode" has no characters and no plot. It is meant as a script that you can leave running all on an empty bridge to make the game look attractive. It is possible to set it at a higher difficulty level so that a player can practice using one or more consoles, but because it constantly regenerates energy, weapons, and enemies the players can never win the "Attract Mode" mission.

Still, "Attract Mode" is a handy thing to run when no one is playing your bridge. The special effects that I tried to do for flying through the black hole never looked as good as I wanted, so if I get rid of those I should be able to publish the revision tonight so you can use it at your convention.

I finished the revision of "Attract Mode" but not in time for your convention. Sorry. The new AI is harder to learn than I thought.
