"The Pegasus Passage" a mission for 1 - 4 players.

posted Oct 27, 2011 20:29:35 by Mike_Substelny
Want to practice your starship Helm skills when the rest of your crew isn't available? "The Pegasus Passage" is for you.

UPDATE: "The Pegasus Passage" is updated for Artemis 1.55! Click here to go to my Mission Page to download it.
A Kralean war fleet ambushed an unarmed Earth convoy and chased them into the Theta Pegasi system. The desperate humans escaped into the null gravity zone between four black holes. Unable to pursue, the Kraleans filled the sector with mines and left them to die. Low on food and fuel, two thousand humans will soon perish unless Artemis can make it through the minefield and pull their ships to safety with a tractor beam. Intended as a challenging obstacle course for Helm, at higher skill levels you may need an Engineer, Science Officer, and a Captain.

"Damn the torpedoes! Four bells, Captain Drayton!"

(Likely actual words of Admiral David Farragut, USN, at the battle of Mobile Bay. Four bells was the signal for the engine room to make full steam ahead).

Hey, Mike!

Are you in need of story line ideas? I am not much of a scriptor but I have written some short stories over the years. Unfortunately lost in the conversion from floppy disk to CD though!.I could come up with a few story lines...

Actually, Captain Wethington, I could use some help with story ideas for Into the Breach. I promised Vorus and Martok that I'd come up with a few ItB missions but so far I only have one idea based on an old FASA Star Trek Role Playing module I wrote in the 80s. Of course it's a Fed mission.

I can't seem to get into a Klingon or Romulan mindset, and I can't think of an original Orion plot line. Could you come up with some original Trek-related story ideas?

I sent you one "longer" story line. I can come up with some shorter ones if the last one was too long.....

I'll read it Saturday. Got a Trek-related version?

"The Pegasus Passage" is coming along nicely and will be ready Friday. It is actually a chapter lifted from a long-term quest adventure I'm working on called "Jaze' Un and the Artemisnauts."

"The Pegasus Passage" is simply a dangerous obstacle course to give any Helmsperson white knuckles. Higher difficulty settings will require an Engineer, Science Officer, and Captain to chew off their finger nails and pray to their gods. There is nothing for Communications to do.

"Jaze' Un and the Artemisnauts" will feature a similar obstacle course, but as Helm steers your ship through this gauntlet of death hordes of bad guys will be shooting at you. I know you can't wait to see all the horrible deaths I'm dreaming up for your full crew of six Artemisnauts.

I've been playing and debugging "The Pegasus Passage" all week. It had more bugs than I anticipated. The good news is that it's almost working perfectly. The bad news is that it will be more fun in a future Artemis release. "The Pegasus Passage" works in Artemis 1.51, but it's frakking difficult!

I plan to publish it Monday night. It's a mission you can play with one player so I will be prepared for immediate criticism.

"The Pegasus Passage" is ready to play!

The good news: This is an obstacle course for Helm, so at low skill levels you can play it with just one player. Log in for a few seconds as Engineer, set your power levels, then grab the Helm and hang on for dear life!

The bad news: "The Pegasus Passage" is pretty darn hard. Someday a future Artemis release will add features that make it easier. Right now it takes a steely-eyed missile man (or woman) to survive "The Pegasus Passage."

NB: I will publish a better, more playable version of "The Pegasus Passage" as soon as Thom does the next Artemis release.

Charlie: I don't see a recent email from you. When did you send it?

All: "The Pegasus Passage" for Artemis 1.55 will be ready shortly. It uses play_sound_now to help you know when to turn to starboard or port. I would love some feedback about who can hear the audio and who cannot.

Okay, Charlie. I sent an email and I would love your feedback.

Note that I already have a better version of Pegasus ready. I almost published it last night but while I was testing it I kept screwing up the ending (forgot that I need to shut off both Warp and Impulse for the tractor beam to engage). I decided I was getting too sleepy so I decided to postpone publication until I was more alert.

UPDATED!

"The Pegasus Passage" has been updated to take advantage of Artemis 1.55 features. Please give it a try as a one-player mission. It's a good way to test out a new helm joystick.

EXCELLENT! I was just about to post here to tell you that the mission was bugged, and then I thought I should check to see if I had the latest version, and by the time I looked at the tab, there was a new post with a new version. Your timing is impeccable, sir!

(I must have had a really old version, because I didn't even have sounds.)

I died about three turns into the passage. But in my defense, I was trying to navigate by mouse. :P
