On screen!

posted Jul 25, 2011 14:10:41 by ataric0n
I see in the Script Ref that there's a function to get stuff up on the main screen. Any restrictions as to what, or particular formats you need to use? I'm going to build a simple mission for my crew's second excursion into deep space and I was thinking of including a few crackly videos (and audio clips) for atmosphere.

I presume you mean..

COMMAND: incoming_message (creates a Comms button to play a media file on the main screen)
ATTRIBUTE: from
VALID: text
ATTRIBUTE: fileName (all media files belong in the mission subdirectory, alongside the mission script XML file)
VALID: text
ATTRIBUTE: mediaType
VALID: 0 (for OGG audio files)

This is for OGG audio files only (though having avi for video would be great as well as perhaps GIF for the images for animation).

If there is something else I've missed that allows video or images to be on screen, please enlighten us. :)

Indeed. There's reference to video in the opening section of the ref also -- would be lovely to send the crew some sort of visual taunt.

As a general rule, any sound, video, or image files that the
mission uses must be in the same folder as the XML file that references it.

I am under the impression that Video and Image files are not put in yet. That he wrote that as a general guide so that when they ARE in, you can use it. :)

Ah, OK. No worries, I'll stick to audio. Any old OGG do the trick, I guess?

Yeah. I don't think there are any restrictions. :)

But I agree with you. Video would be super awesome. :) But I realize also how hard it is to handle programing-wise. :)

I think video would be awesome, too. But having just published my first mission with audio files, I realize that creating the videos would be a huge amount of work. Between the actors, the editing, and the sound effects it took days to produce and package the 32 audio files in "Havoc in the Hamak Sector." If you add sets, costumes, props, and lighting to the mix the complexity goes up by an order of magnitude.

IMO Thom should have higher priorities than adding video. So far we mission scripters have barely scratched the surface of what you can do with audio. I say he should let us explore audio a little more before adding video.

Fair point. It's not a demand or anything :) I just thought the feature might have been in. I'm only putting together something simple -- a nebula full of bad guys, a few messages from commanding officers and taunts from the nasties -- so audio will do the trick. If I make anything passable I'll share it on here.
