How to organize play sessions

posted Jul 22, 2011 13:54:49 by ThomRobertson
I'd love to find some web resource or webpage code that lets all players easily connect and play games of Artemis over the internet. I'm not talking about Artemis itself; I'm talking about making it easy to find and join a crew tomorrow night.

1) Any ideas? I've heard about a website called MyLeague. I've heard about a wordpress offshoot called BuddyPress.

2) until we can find something better, I'm inclined to make a new board, with strict posting rules, so people can announce when they'll setup a server and play, and contact info so people can contact them and join the crew. What are your ideas on how to format this?

A Steam group or Facebook profile would probably make a good temporary solution, however, since I'm not not everyone who might be interested in the game uses Steam or Facebook, or some other similar networks, it wouldn't be viable.

I'm thinking a website with a database and calendar, a way to message other users, and a profile page (that lists contact information and preferences for stations and such) would work best.

I'm not good enough with webpages to start such a project, but I'll take a look around to see if I can find anything worthwhile.

I guess a well organized forum could also do the job.

Google Calendar may be a good solution. Not sure if anyone is using Joomla as a CMS, but its got a bunch of extensions for things like this: http://extensions.joomla.org/extensions/calendars-a-events

Thom, our teams thoughts are that a page here would be fine. Maybe a post spot for scheduled games, and one for random games. A couple weeks ago we lost a few players last minute and we put up a quick post here and a bit later we got a response and where able so get in a few games.

See, that's EXACTLY what I'd like to facilitate. I want to provide a system that lets you collect a couple of pickup players easily on short notice, plus schedule your own team on longer notice and stuff.

Joomla, huh? I might be able to provide that. I'll look into it.

Drupal is another solution. It's a lightweight CMS similar to Joombla.

I would like to encourage you guys to go to your local hackerspaces with the game. If you don't know what a hackerspace is, well it's basically (not a c0mput0r hack0r gr0up) an open laboratory, workshop, and studio all rolled into one. A gym, for nerds, in a sense. Other than all the cool sciencey stuff they do, they most likely also love science fiction and games; all kinds of games from: Dungeons and Dragons, to retro computer games, to full on Live Action Roleplaying.

In Philadelphia, we have 2 local hackerspaces that are actually 5 blocks apart from each other. I took the game to them, and now we're all regularly playing Artemis, and sometimes twice a week in some cases. Also, we regularly play against a hackerspace in Ireland and we're trying to contact another in North Carolina.

To get in touch with your local hackerspace(s), go here (hackerspaces.org), click on "List of hackerspaces", and find your city or town there.

Goodluck!

The TSN site could have a section to help facilitate this. similar to a forum, but with specific regions per board. kind of like craigslist.
