What I saw at Ba-Con

posted Jul 11, 2011 17:51:36 by ThomRobertson
Had a great time at Ba-Con in Columbus. The staff treated me better than any other con I've taken Artemis to. Things started out very quiet on Friday, but Saturday and Sunday the word was out, crews kept coming to play, and I had lots of repeat players.

Ba-Con players were the first to try out my new gun-cam and sub-system targeting. For most it was confusing, but one guy "got it" and started disabling enemy systems effectively. I think I'll leave the current "auto-fire" on be default, and let weapons officers switch on manual fire if they want to.

Thanks, Ba-Con!

I like that though, that it was a bit confusing and hard to use, but one guy *getting it* shows that it's not impossibly complicated and I'm sure if all the others took it home and had a play about they'd have great fun too, and I think it's a better sense of achievement, very excited about this!

I know I will be switching to manual fire. :D

I have never been more excited for an upcoming Artemis feature.

PS: Later, you should also be able to do this with nukes, obviously not for sub system targeting, but just for better more precise aim. And not like full 360 targeting, because that wouldn't make sense for a torpedo tube, but maybe have a forward slice where you can aim. That way the helms would still have to do something like he does now.
A vital mission, impossible odds and a ruthless enemy, what more could we ask for?

I've tried the gun camera targeting. It works fine, but it's fairly useless in a furball. A Weapons Officer should only use the gun camera in a one-on-one dog fight, and only with a really good helmsperson at your side.
"Damn the torpedoes! Four bells, Captain Drayton!"

(Likely actual words of Admiral David Farragut, USN, at the battle of Mobile Bay. Four bells was the signal for the engine room to make full steam ahead).

I want to. I've emailed Ba-Con about it. Currently I don't know how much help I'll need, but I'll post about it if I do. Thanks!
