Pregnant women and Artemis

posted Jun 14, 2011 05:28:01 by Eric
With a title like that, this could go anywhere...

So a couple of weekends ago we were finally able to get a full crew together including my wife (who was 6 weeks along expecting our 2nd), her friend (who was 9 months along expecting her first) and husband, my brother, and another friend.

After cutting our teeth on some basic games, we switched to a mission (The Waning Dark). The look of pure joy on our pregnant friend's face when she heard the audio message was amazing! (She was Comms all night.) I think even the baby kicked for joy. It was like we were really on a star ship.

While her and her husband are gamers, they are were not necessarily sci-fi gamers. However, after only playing that one time, they went home and convinced a family member to buy Artermis and starting having strategy planning discussions.

I hope I've won myself a full time crew including a couple of newborns. (The Artemis is a family vessel after all.)

Great work Thom! You're game is bringing together all sorts of people!

So they liked the audio in mission scripts? That's great! I had been wavering on whether they were worth the trouble or not.
"Damn the torpedoes! Four bells, Captain Drayton!"

(Likely actual words of Admiral David Farragut, USN, at the battle of Mobile Bay. Four bells was the signal for the engine room to make full steam ahead).

Yes, they liked and so did I. It added a whole new layer the guy I thought. In fact, I spent a lot of time making every message in my Saving the Traders mission into audio files. I used Audacity to pitch change my voice for the Admiral and the Away Team and then used a web based text to speech to the K Maru and Epsilon 9. I even got tons of authentic Trek engineering sounds, opening doors, computer call outs, etc going in the background. I love it!

So, you're already working on Artemis: The Next Generation?
I'm not a mad scientist. I'm an angry one. You'd be wise to fear the latter.

So, Eric, can we get the Save the Traders audio files to play on our own bridges?

Actually I was referring to the audio in Thom's mission The Waning Dark that everyone loved, but I can pass along the audio for the Traders one. (I haven't actually got our Artemis: The Next Gen crew together yet to play my mission.) The only problem is that I couched everything in the language of Trek, so it's Enterprise, Starfleet, Klingons, Romulans, and Orions in all the audio files. Still interested?
