Sharing Complete Missions

posted Apr 28, 2011 17:51:59 by Mike_Substelny
EDIT:

I whipped up a quick Google Site for sharing my mission scripts. Click here to visit the site. Right now the Shakedown Cruise is the only mission, but I have more in the pipeline. Click here to see writeups of the Shakedown Cruise and the next eight mission scripts that I have in development.

OLD MESSAGE:

Thom, does this website offer a way to share more than a script? Within a week I would like to be able to share a complete MISS_ folder, including OGG files for incoming communications. I that I can upload an image to the forum, but what about a zipped folder?

There is probably an FTP solution but I'm not aware of it.

I've always just posted stuff like that to Filefront. It's not exactly great, but it seems reliable and stable.

Maybe a first step could be just starting a mission-sharing section of these forums where we could upload our missions to whichever service we like and provide links here? That way, not matter what service each use wants to use, the link will be here. And each mission could have its own dedicated thread on the forums for questions and discussions. (It might be a permanent solution, but while there is still a small number of missions, it could work well.)

I thought this WAS the mission-sharing section of the forums? I've been waiting for you guys to upload stuff so I can show my crew.

My crew has a guy wanting to make scripts, but he sucks.

I've got a mission or two in the works, but some of it uses copyrighted material from Star Trek (mostly in the form of audio tracks for comms) and I'm not sure Thom would like us posting that sort of thing here. I suppose I could just remove it, but it loses something if you do that.

But rest assured I have other missions in the works that I plan on uploading for opinions and fun! Coming hopefully soon, depending on available free time!

Uaing Star Trek audio should be fine; it most likely falls into the fair use category, unless you're selling the mission files.

Yeah, you're probably right. But I'd like to make sure Thom is okay with it. Don't want to bite the hand that feeds us! (Delicious, delicious Artemis!!)

Yeah, you're okay from a legal standpoint, unless you plan on selling your missions.

EDIT: I would definitely include credits in some way noting that the audio clips are indeed from Star Trek, though.

Got a group together to play through my "finished and debugged" mission script tonight. Of course is has many bugs. It will take a few more days to finish it.

You are correct, I can't allow that, or the lawyers will come eat me up! :)

I want to take the best missions and (with the creators permission) fold them back into the game so everyone has them, and I'll still be selling the game.

Now, as long as you host the files elsewhere, I have no problem with YOU discussing and linking such missions here.

@Thom: You're planning on compiling the best missions? AWESOME.

I will tell my crew that we need to put something together :3

I was always planning that, assuming the authors' permissions of course. The missions you guys create make the whole game better. New players shouldn't miss out.

I'm a Google guy so I'll probably put up a Google site. The non-audio version of the Shakedown is (pretty much) ready to go and I'll post it to these forums. I plan to create a Google site for audio-enhanced adventures written by me and my collaborators as soon as all the audio is finished, edited, and organized.

Been busy this weekend, so I STILL haven't tried your mission, but I still really want to. Hopefully July will be less hectic...

But the website idea is great! Is that a free service from Google? How easy is it to set up?

Goodle Sites is the quick and dirty way to set up a website with minimal work. All you need is a Google account.
